The Celebrity Cookbook

Collected by Miss Dinah Shore on behalf of “Women For” – a volunteer non-partisan organization

1967

The coolest thing about this cookbook is not that Dinah Shore collected these recipes from all the most famous people of the day, but that she re-printed them as they were sent to her on each celebrity’s personalized stationary! I I love the idea that people like Phyllis Diller, Lorne Greene, Gypsy Rose Lee, Zero Mostel, and Gene Kelly actually took the time to type out their favorite recipes for her. Each recipe has the celebrity’s monogram or - in the case of Rose Lee and a few others – their cartoon likeness at the top and their signature at the bottom. Who knew that Natalie Wood knew how to make stroganoff? And it was excellent! The recipe was straightforward: sirloin, onions, mushrooms, tomato juice, water, sherry, sour cream and salt and pepper. The meat is dredged in flour, browned in butter and removed. The onions and mushrooms are sautéed in the same pan (I substituted fresh mushrooms for the canned ones called for), then the meat is returned, the liquids are added, and the whole thing cooks for an hour. Sour cream goes in at the last minute and voila! It was so good I ate it straight out of the pot. Wood recommends serving rice with the stroganoff which seemed sacrilegious. I made the usual buttered egg noodles with peas mixed in. I guess the peas were sacrilegious on my part, but the kids had to have some vegetables!

Thanks a lot. I have been looking for this recipe for about 10 years, ever since I lost the book it was from. This was the best stroganoff recipe ever.
It’s Stroganoff tonight!!! At long last.

Thank you thank you thank you.

    Cheers

    Ian.
